Great Lakes Copper Research was incorporated in the State of Michigan as a nonprofit organization in 1999. We organized to research and disseminate information on American Indian copper, its mining, transporting, trading, crafting and utilization, from earliest times through Historic Indian use of copper. Research GoalsWe are building a copper Taxonomy, Typology and Nomenclature to identify Cultural Tags. We are identifying Creation Harks and Historical Markers. Through the use of cultural tags, creation marks, historical markers and other available evidence we will identify artifact type and eventually the culture that created the artifact. We collect examples of every type of American Indian copper, prehistoric and historic. Copper Artifacts We collect prehistoric copper from other areas of the world for comparative studies. World Copper Artifacts We have some reproductions and counterfeit pieces for research purposes and authentication studies. We are building a library of books and journals on prehistoric copper. Sources of Information About Copper . We conduct research on prehistoric copper. Copper Research. We answer questions for students, archaeologists, collectors, and researchers. Questions & answers We assist in the identification of individual copper artifacts. , Questions & Answers, COAs We authenticate copper artifacts. COAs We can provide lectures to schools and other institutions. Services We provide some links to other copper related web sites. All services are free to research institutions, except for, minor incurred expenses. If you ship an artifact to us for identification or authentication, you must pay the postage and insurance both ways. If we travel to provide a service, you will pay travel expenses. Most services are also free to individuals and collectors, but we charge $35.00 for a through, professional and scholarly certificate of authenticity. All receipts go directly into research. |
